A chlorine test can look reassuring while algae starts finding a foothold. That is the frustrating calling card of excessive stabilizer: chlorine is present, but too much of it is held back from doing its job. CYA tests can be difficult to read near the high end, and older reagents can produce questionable results.

Never completely drain an in-ground pool without guidance from a qualified pool professional. Groundwater pressure can lift or damage a fiberglass shell, crack plaster, or shift a vinyl liner. A partial drain is much safer, but groundwater conditions, liner age, and local water restrictions still matter.
Turn off the pump, heater, automation equipment, and salt system before lowering the water. Use a submersible pump or the pool's waste setting if your plumbing and local regulations allow it. Send water only to an approved drainage area. Do not discharge chlorinated pool water where it can enter a neighbor's property, storm drain, creek, or septic system.

Once CYA is back in range, use stabilized products strategically rather than automatically. Liquid chlorine and calcium hypochlorite add chlorine without adding CYA. Calcium hypochlorite is useful for many pools but increases calcium hardness, which may be a poor fit for hard-water areas or pools already near their calcium target.
For saltwater pools, the salt cell produces chlorine without continuously adding stabilizer. You will still need to monitor CYA because it remains in the water, and some salt system manufacturers recommend a specific CYA range for efficient production. Follow the equipment manual rather than assuming every salt pool needs the same target.
A practical routine is to test CYA monthly during the season and whenever you have used tablets or dichlor frequently. Track what each chlorine product adds, not just how much chlorine it supplies. That one habit prevents the familiar cycle of buying more shock, fighting cloudy water, and eventually needing to replace a large volume of water.
When a Partial Drain Needs Professional Help
